SKYLAR

Boneless.

I was completely and utterly fucked—quite literally as well. It took me almost an hour to detach myself from Ash, and even after sitting for so long, just cuddling and talking about nothing in particular, my legs refused to work.

Ash kept laughing while I struggled to stay upright, earning a handful of scalding glances from me. But I couldn’t exactly complain.

For a moment there, I forgot about the world on fire surrounding us, and all the shit we needed to do. I forgot about Judah, about the Order, about Lauren—even about Dylan.

But that last part sent a pang through my heart, and I didn’t exactly know how to broach that subject with Ash. He kept holding my hand as we walked upstairs, and I knew we had to talk about Dylan, but not now.

Not when there were other, more important things.

And then I remembered what he said. “Ash?” I started. “Why did you say that I wasn’t safe?”

He suddenly stopped walking, but he didn’t turn toward me. I kept staring at his profile, and even in the partial darkness, I could see the tick in his cheek. His eyes hardened, his jaw became granite, and my heart thundered at the mere notion that there was somebody out there—again—that wanted to harm me.

“Is it Judah?” I whispered. “Because I can handle him.”

“It’s not Judah,” he spat out, as if his name was poison and he wanted to get rid of it. “At least it’s not only him.” His face turned toward me, the torment in his eyes knocking right through me. I took a step backward, letting go of his hand, while my mind went into overdrive. “You mentioned other men that worked with Judah. They know about you, Moonshine, and they’re not happy.”

“How—” I cleared my throat. “How do you know?”

“It doesn’t really matter how right now. What matters is we get you out of town.”

“But you can’t,” I blurted out. “You can’t take me out of Winworth.”

“Moonshine—”

“No! I’m a part of this.”

“I know. But I would rather have you as far away from here as possible, protected, than surrounded by these monsters. I don’t know who to trust here, Sky.”

“But Rowan and Kane—”

He shook his head. “I trust them, but they’re also powerless. These are not small-town criminals, Skylar. These people that want you dead are dangerous.”

“Then we fight them. We can fight them.”

“We can’t.” He sighed. “We can’t fight them because I don’t know where they are. I don’t have enough information about them, and even if I did, I wouldn’t be able to protect you here. I came to Winworth to kill Judah for what he did to my parents. I never thought that I would need to fight against the Syndicate.”

“The who?” I asked, confusion lacing every word.

“I’ll explain later. Right now, I need to get you out of here. We need a plan and we need it now.”

He took a hold of my hand again and started walking, pulling me with him.

“Ash,” I tried. “Stop. Please stop,” I whispered.
